Songs of Winter – Jackie Harripersad

Deep green surrounds me

Fades to grey on a small winding path.
Multiple primary colours,
clashing together;
greatly contrasting their dim surroundings.

A creek bubbling with icy water,
cat tails taller than Gods.
Loose stones kicked along with frozen feet.
Permafrost blades of grass,
brown with age of the season.

Rustle of branches,
howling of wind,
shriek of birds;
wings fluttering in vain.

I need to escape.
