Poetry by Marsha Dedukh

Marsha Dedukh is in her second year of Arts and Contemporary Studies at Ryerson.

She’s sent us the following poem entitled “Sobriety”. It’ll leave you thinking.

some of us are asleep on the sidewalk with plastic bag shoes

others are sitting in offices deciding their fate

everyone’s vice is their existence

whether it’s coffee or lovers, or food, or crack cocaine

the truly sober avoid drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, excessive food, caffeine, masturbation, love, religion

love is as much a drug as any other

i can only think of

the leftover people;

the truly sober

must be addicted

to sadness.
